(Srila Prabhupada at Tittenhurst Park, Ascot, England, September, 1969)

"So this movement, Krishna consciousness movement, is a declaration of war with māyā. Declaration of war, but in a different way -- by this chanting process: Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare. The transcendental vibration will clarify the whole atmosphere, and as soon as these Krishna conscious soldiers come out victorious, the whole world will be peaceful."

(Srila Prabhupada Lecture, Bombay, March 30, 1971)

"Those who are opposing Krishna consciousness movement, we have to fight with them to our best capacity. Never mind if we are defeated. That is also service. Krishna sees the service. Defeated or victorious, depend on Krishna. But fighting must be there."

(Srila Prabhupada Lecture, Mayapur, March 1, 1977)

"We have to fight with all these so-called leaders, scientists, and philosophers, just like Krsna came to kill all the demons because the whole world is full of demons."

(Srila Prabhupada Letter, October 29, 1973)

"It is very difficult to conquer over the influence of Maya, but who is firmly fixed up in Krishna Conciousness cannot be a victim of Maya. Anyway, we cannot stop our fighting with Maya, neither we can expect that all our soldiers will remain unhurt. You know Arjuna's son Abhimanya was killed in the battle in which Bhismadeva was a party. Fight Krishna's cause sincerely and you will be gloried with victory."

(Srila Prabhupada Letter, December 21, 1967)

Prabhupada: We Vaiṣṇavas do not say that there is no need of fighting. We never say. When there is need of fighting we must fight. Rather, somebody in New York, some Goldsmith, he was that, 'Why Krishna is advising Arjuna to fight, to become violent?' So somebody protests like that. But there is no meaning of protesting against the action of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. That is our view. So we Vaiṣṇavas, we are chanting. It does not mean that when there is need of fighting with avaiṣṇava we shall lack in strength. We can fight. One gentleman inquired from me that 'Vaiṣṇavism makes one dull. He cannot act.' And, 'No. You have not seen a Vaiṣṇava.' In the two fightings, great fighting, the Rāmāyaṇa and Mahābhārata, the hero was Hanuman and Arjuna, and they fought.

Guest: They fought.

Prabhupada: Yes. And who can be better Vaiṣṇava than them?

Guest: Nobody.

Prabhupada: So Vaiṣṇava does not mean he is dull. No.

Guest: No, that is well proved. If there is need...

Prabhupada: Yes. So our present fighting is atheism, against atheism. They say, 'There is no God. God is dead. I am God. You are God.' We are fighting against these principles. So our fighting is very strong. You don't think that we are keeping idly. I have come here to fight with these atheists, you see, and we go everywhere. We are fighting with atheists all over the world. So we are meeting so many opposing elements. You see? They say, 'God is dead.' In America, when I first went, they were popularizing theory that 'God is dead.' But they again accepted and: 'God is not dead, but He is here with Swamiji.' They accepted. So these atheistic theories, that 'Everyone is God,' 'I am God,' 'you are God,' 'God is dead,' 'there is no God,' 'God is not person' -- we are fighting against these principles. We say, 'God is Krishna. The Supreme Personality of Godhead is Krishna. He is a person, and He is not dead.' This is our preaching. Therefore it is a fight."

(Srila Prabhupada Conversation, December 13, 1970, Indore)

Prabhupada: Don't be falsely puffed up. Follow the ācārya's instruction and try to make yourself perfect, mature. Then it will be very easy to fight out māyā. Yes. Ācāryas, they declare war against māyā's activities, that māyā instructing that 'Here is wine. Here is cigarette. Here is that...' In your country these advertisements are very prominent, hoarding both ways: wine advertisement, cigarette advertisement, naked woman advertisement, and sometimes gambling also, advertisement. What is that? Congo?

Devotees: Bingo.

Prabhupāda: Bingo. Yes. So this is māyā. And our declaration of war with māyā -- no intoxication, no meat-eating, no bingo -- these are our declaration of war. So we have to fight in that way, because nobody can understand Krishna without being free from all sinful activities. These are sinful activities. Therefore it is ācārya's business to stop these nonsense activities. Otherwise they'll not be able to understand, especially the meat-eaters. They cannot understand."

(Srila Prabhupada Lecture, Mayapur, April 6, 1975)

"Senā-pati means these two brothers, Rūpa Gosvāmī and Sanātana Gosvāmī, were appointed as the commander in chief, commander in chief in this fighting with māyā. This Krishna consciousness means it is declaration of fighting with māyā. Māyā is killing all the poor conditioned souls, and Caitanya Mahāprabhu declared war against māyā by spreading Krishna consciousness. And the commander in chiefs are Rūpa-Sanātana. In other words, if anyone wants to be expert in Krishna consciousness to fight with māyā, they must follow the principles of Rūpa Gosvāmī and Sanātana Gosvāmī.

There is a very nice song sung by one poet, Vaiṣṇava poet. He's singing like this:

    gaurāṅga bolite habe pulaka-śarīra
hari hari bolite nayane ba'be nīra

He's aspiring that 'When I shall loudly call Lord Caitanya, Gaurāṅga?' Gaurāṅga is Lord Caitanya. 'And my body will be shivering. And when I shall chant Hare Krishna, tears will flow down from my eyes.'

    gaurāṅga bolite habe pulaka-śarīra
hari hari bolite nayane ba'be nīra

Āra kabe nitāi-cānder koruṇā hoibe: 'And when I shall be favored by Nityānanda Prabhu?' Āra kabe nitāi-cānder koruṇā hoibe, saṁsāra-bāsanā mora kabe tuccha ha'be: 'When I shall be detached from material enjoyment?' Viṣaya chāriyā kabe śuddha ha'be mana: 'And when I shall be detached from this material enjoyment, my mind will be purified. My mind will be freed from all contamination of material dirty things.' Kabe hāma herabo śrī-vṛndāvana: 'And at that time it will be possible to see Vṛndāvana.' Rūpa-raghunātha-pade hoibe ākuti. Now, here the author, I mean the singer says that 'When I shall be too much devoted to the principles of Rūpa Gosvāmī so that I'll be able to understand what is the pastimes of Rādhā and Krishna?' In other words, if we want to understand Rādhā and Krishna and Caitanya philosophy, then we should try to follow the instruction left by Rūpa Gosvāmī and Sanātana Gosvāmī. They are the commander in chief in this movement."

(Srila Prabhupada Lecture, San Francisco, March 18, 1967)

"Very, very abominable condition in this age of Kali. Very, very. It is the beginning of Kali. Now we have to pass through 427,000's of years. Kali-yuga will make progress in that way. And people are now practicing eating their children, and at the end of Kali there will be no food available. They'll have to eat the children, just like the snakes do. The snake eat their own children. There are many animals -- they eat their own children.

So don't try to repeat your birth again and again in this Kali-yuga. It will be not very happy life. Better sacrifice everything in this life and be fully Krishna conscious and go back to home, back to Godhead. Don't wait for the next life. This is very seriously repeated, that 'This life I shall finish my Krishna consciousness business,' and, as it is stated in the Bhagavad-gītā, that Krishna consciousness business means to understand Krishna rightly. And He's explaining Himself rightly. Where is the difficulty to finish the Krishna consciousness business? If Krishna is explaining Himself, what He is, then where is your difficulty? Krishna is explaining Himself in the Bhagavad-gītā, Krishna is sending His representative ācārya to teach you, and Krishna is within yourself trying to teach you if you are actually serious. Then where is the difficulty? Inside, outside, always, books, knowledge -- He is prepared. So where is the difficulty to make yourself perfect in Krishna consciousness? There is no difficulty at all. Provided you are serious, you can become fully Krishna conscious in this very life. You are all young men. You are not old man like me. I have no opportunity."

(Srila Prabhupada Lecture, Mayapur, April 6, 1975)

"The living entity is victimized, and in this life you can adventure to conquer over it. This is human life. The cats and dogs, they cannot fight with māyā, but a human being, he can fight. So if we don't fight, we don't take that adventure, then we remain cats and dogs. The cats and dogs, they fight amongst themselves but not with the māyā. So aborigines, although they have got features of human being, they are no more than the cats and dogs. So they also fight amongst themselves. They do not know that the fighting spirit should be utilized to declare war against māyā. That is possible in human life. Athāto brahma jijñāsā. This fighting is philosophy: 'What is the ultimate cause? What is Brahman? What I am?' Fighting against darkness, sleeping. Kota nidrā jāo māyā-piśācīra kole. Everyone is sleeping on the lap of māyā. Now, this human form of life is not for sleeping but for awakening and fight with māyā. That is human life."

(Srila Prabhupada Morning Walk, Mayapur, February 6, 1976)

"Therefore, Krishna Consciousness is also a sort of fight; but not with rifles. Our weapon is karatalas. In this age there is no need of fighting with rifles because the population is so poor that they are already killed by so many disturbances. They are short lived, poor in knowledge, slack in advancement of spiritual life, unfortunate, and embarrassed by so many miserable conditions of life; like war, famine pestilence, poverty and so on. So to kill these persons by rifle is like bringing a cannon for killing a mosquito. So Lord Caitanya introduced this fighting principle of Sankirtana Movement to reclaim all the fallen souls, who consist of so-called philosophers, half-educated scientists, misguided educationists and a miscreant society. If you can consolidate a party of soldiers as described by you, chanting Hare Krishna Mantra and claiming everyone of them to Krishna Consciousness, that will be a glorious task, and you have all of my good wishes for you for this purpose."

(Srila Prabhupada Letter, August 3, 1969)

"Krishna is speaking. Still, these rascals will not understand Krishna. So what is Krishna's fault? It is our fault. Andha. Just like the owl. Owl will never open the eyes to see that there is sunlight. You know this, owl? So they will not open. However you may say, 'Mr. Owl, please open your eyes and see the sun,' 'No, there is no sun. I don't see.' This owl civilization. So you have to fight with these owls. You must be very strong, especially the sannyāsīs. We have to fight with the owls. We have to open their eyes by force from this, with machine. So this is going on. So this Krishna consciousness movement is a fight against all the owls."

(Srila Prabhupada Lecture, San Francisco, July 19, 1975)

"They are now feeling the pressure of the opposite party. So... Fight is fight. When there is fight, my Guru Mahārāja used to say, 'Some of our soldiers will die. It doesn't matter.' You don't expect that not a single soldier of your party will not die. No, some of them will die. Still, fight must go on. Fight cannot be stopped. So fight like brave soldiers, Krishna will help you. Don't make any compromise. No truce with these demons. Fight must be. Our fighting weapon is Hare Krishna movement. That's all. Sāṅgopāṅgāstra-pārṣadam (SB 11.5.32). Astra. That astra is yajñaiḥ saṅkīrtana, this saṅkīrtana, this astra weapon. They're now afraid of this astra more than atomic weapon. Is it not?"

(Srila Prabhupada Conversation, Bhuvanesvara, February 3, 1977)

"For a servant of Krishna, there is no distinction of hell and heaven. Our only ambition should be to serve the Lord. It does not matter where the service is demanded. It is exactly like the soldiers are asked to come forward to fight and there is no question of selecting the place. There are many sincere souls like you in the western world and my Guru Maharaja wanted me to come here and to pick up as many of you as is possible. And I am trying my best. By Grace of Krishna, you have joined me to help in this Krishna Consciousness propaganda and Krishna will surely be pleased upon you very much. Please try to continue this activity of cooperation and we are sure to come out successful."

(Srila Prabhupada Letter, January 11, 1970)

"The more you fight with these rascals, the more you advance in Krishna consciousness. You are a fighting soldier. Krishna very much appreciates."

(Srila Prabhupada Morning Walk, Perth May 12, 1975)

"It is the injunction of the Vedas that the Spiritual Master should not be treated as ordinary man even if sometimes the Spiritual Master behaves like ordinary man. It is the duty of the disciple to accept Him as Superhuman Man. In the beginning of your letter your comparison of the soldier and commander is very appropriate. We are on the battlefield of Kuruksetra -- one side Maya, the other side Krsna. So the regulative principles of a battlefield, namely to abide by the order of the commander, must be followed. Otherwise it is impossible to direct the fighting capacity of the soldiers and thus defeat the opposing elements. Kindly therefore take courage. You are capable in so many ways. Let things be rightly done so that our mission may be correctly pushed forward to come out victorious."

(Srila Prabhupada Letter, July, 1970)

"But here, a person who comes in Krishna consciousness, even for a few days if he is with us, he gets the contamination of Krishna consciousness so that in his next life he'll begin again, again, again. So he's not loser. One injection of Krishna consciousness will make him some day perfect in Krishna consciousness, and he's sure to go back to Godhead, back to home. So try to spread this Krishna consciousness movement. And this is your sādhana, execution of austerity, penance. Because you have to meet so many opposing elements. You have to fight with them. That is tapasya. You are tolerating so much insults, so much botheration, and so much inconveniences, personal discomfort, everything sacrificed, money -- but it will not go in vain. Rest assured. It will not go in vain. Krishna will, I mean to say, reward you sufficiently. You go on executing this Krishna consciousness."

(Srila Prabhupada Lecture, Los Angeles, November 15, 1968)

"Yes, we are fighting impersonalism and voidism with pure devotional service. Impersonalism and voidism kills the natural aptitude of devotion which is lying dormant in everyone's heart. Therefore we are printing books like our KRSNA book so that people may know it that the supreme absolute truth is a person. The perfection of every living creature is to render transcendental loving service to that Supreme Person and thereby go back home, back to Godhead. Krishna has said in Bhagavad Gita that 'whoever explains my transcendental glories to others is most dear to me in this world and never will there be one more dear to me than he.' So go on with your organization for distribution of my books through press and other modern media and Krishna will certainly be pleased upon you. We can use everything -- television, radio, movies, or whatever there may be -- to tell about Krishna and outside of devotional service all these modern paraphernalia are just so much rubbish."

(Srila Prabhupada Letter, November 24, 1970)

"We cannot stop this movement. It is actually a fight against Maya. So Maya may also sometimes cause casualties in our camp. So, we must only thank Krsna and seriously dedicate everything for Him."

(Srila Prabhupada Letter, June 14, 1973)

"Now we shall put this challenge against this wrong theory that life comes from matter. Undoubtedly matter has come from life, and we can present so many practical proofs of this. So let Svarupa Damodara and Ramananda think in their own chemical language how to push this fact to the scientific world. If by Krsna's grace they even partially admit it, it will be a great triumph. My point is even if they partially accept then they have to find out what is the original life. In the sastras we have information that the original life in the universe is Brahma and Brahma is also a product of Garbhodakasayi Vishnu. Garbhodakasayi Visnu is a product of Karanadakasayi Visnu and in this way we ultimately reach Krsna the Cause of all Causes. We have to give a fight to the wrong conception of the unauthorized scientist."

(Srila Prabhupada Letter, July 19, 1973)

"We have to understand that fighting spirit is there in everyone. You cannot check it; you cannot stop it. We do not say stop. The Māyāvādī philosopher says that 'You stop this thing.' But that is not possible. You cannot stop. Because you are living entity, you have got all these propensities. How you can stop it? But it should be utilized properly. That's all.

You have got the fighting spirit. How to utilize it? Yes. Narottama dāsa Ṭhākura recommends, 'krodha' bhakta-dveṣī-jane (Prema-bhakti-candrikā): 'Those who are envious of God or God's devotee, you can utilize your anger upon them.' You can utilize. The anger you cannot give up. Our business is how to utilize it. That is Krishna consciousness. Everything has to be utilized. We do not say that 'You stop this, stop that.' No. Krishna says, yat karoṣi, yaj juhosi, yad aśnāsi, yat tapasyasi kuruśva tad mad-arpanam (BG 9.27). Yat karoṣi. Krishna does not say that 'You do this, you do that.' He says, 'Whatever you do, but the result should come to Me.'

So here the position is that Arjuna is to fight not for himself, but he is only thinking in terms of himself. He says, te avasthitaḥ pramukhe dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ, yān eva hatvā na jijīviṣāmas (BG 2.6): 'They are my brothers, relatives. If they die... We do not wish to die. Now they are in my front. I have to kill them?' So still he is thinking in terms of his own satisfaction. He is preparing the background -- how materialistic person, they think in the terms of personal satisfaction. So that has to be given up. Not personal satisfaction, Krishna's satisfaction. That is Krishna consciousness. Whatever you do, it doesn't matter, you have to test it whether you are doing it for Krishna. That is your perfection. Not only perfection, that is the perfection of your mission of human life."

(Srila Prabhupada Lecture, London, August 6, 1973)

"You don't sleep. Never Krishna said to Arjuna that 'I am your friend. I am God. You sleep here. I'll do everything.' No! 'You must fight.' That is wanted. Yuddhyasva mām anusmara: (BG 8.7) 'You fight and remember Me. Then I'll do everything.' This is an opportunity of remembering Krishna always -- Krishna, save us."

(Srila Prabhupada Conversation, Bombay January 9, 1977)

"As you always desire to help me in my missionary ambition, so also I am praying always to Krishna that the boys and girls who have stretched their helping hand in this country in this connection may always be in good health and continue to assist me in my missionary activities. I am so glad to learn that you are prepared to work even harder, as a forward soldier, to fight the Maya. May Krishna give you more and more strength."

(Srila Prabhupada Letter, March 18, 1969)

"So we should not be afraid. Because this place is dangerous, we should expect always danger. But if we are faithful to Krishna, if we simply, I mean to say, expect help from Krishna, then Krishna will save you."
